  The releases of the well known operating system: Windows, have improved over the years. Although some weren’t as popular as others, the OS remains the most popular of them all. If you have a system with just Windows installed, it’s not like your are not protected from any dangers from the  outside world. There are many built-in defences in this magnificent application and I will be telling you about the ones you have in Windows Vista and why they should be turned ON or OFF.

  Before I get to the part where I tell you about all the features, I just want to make clear that I won’t discuss all of them. I will probably forget some and I will also intentionally leave some out of this piece of content, because I don’t find them important enough. If I would have to tell you about all the options that Windows gives you, my fingers would probably fall off when I’m done typing.

  Let’s start with one of the fundamentals of the protection that Windows offers: Windows Update. Windows Update isn’t really something that defends you, but it’s still very important. It keeps all the software that do defend you, up to date, to stop the latest created dangers like new spyware and stuff. Without Windows Update, the security of this Operating System would be totally senseless. Make sure that you have Automatic Updating turned ON. You can edit the settings in Windows Vista by accessing the “Control panel”, click “Security” and then click “Security Center”.

  Up next I will discuss the Windows Firewall. A firewall is a piece of software that checks  everything coming from the internet to make sure if it’s suitable to access your computer. Depending on your settings, the firewall can deny access to malicious software and this stops hacking. The Windows Firewall is pretty strong, but the firewall that comes with most Anti-Virus programs, is usually more advanced. Make sure that also this feature is Activated. This can also be changed in the “Security Center”. Be sure that you don’t have two firewalls activated at the same time, they will conflict with each other. If you have an Anti-virus application with Firewall, the one from Windows should be turned off automatically, but make sure you check this.

  Windows comes with a built in Anti-spyware/adware application, although it’s not very strong: Windows Defender. This piece of software protects you from malicious and unwanted software. This is a very important part of your protection, but if you have an Anti-virus program, Windows Defender will be turned off so they won’t conflict with each other. Be sure that this function is also set ON  and that you don’t have two of these programs running.

  The last two things that I will tell you about are the Internet Security Settings and the User  Account Control (UAC). Well, actually I’m not really going to tell you about the Internet Security Settings, since most of them won’t work if you don’t have Internet Explorer, and they are really complex. You don’t need to alter anything in these settings, so there is also no need to know much about them, just know they’re there. The UAC however, is pretty important and not that difficult. The UAC makes sure that always when something or someone is trying to make a change that could affect your computer settings, they need a confirmation or maybe even a password. This prevents malicious and unwanted software from getting access to your computer without your knowing. It’s very  important to keep this feature activated at all time!!
